The ARTM and its partners are launching a market test to assess the reliability and robustness of a mobile app allowing users to buy transit fares and reload an OPUS card using a smartphone.

Learn about the project

As part of the Concerto Project (Digital metropolitan project), the ARTM and all public transit players are joining forces to develop a mobile app that will allow users to buy transit fares and add them to an OPUS card using their smartphone.

Beta market test

The first market test, on the beta version of the app, will run from February 5 to March 3, 2024. It will allow us to assess the robustness and reliability of this beta version.

For this test, some 2,000 people were recruited from the Let’s talk mobility panel and the OPUS en Ligne website.

What does the test involve?

Participants will have to use the app for one month and then to give us their feedback. This will allow us to optimize the app before its market launch.

You have been selected to take part in this initial test phase

Please see the accompanying documents for instructions on installing and using the beta version of the Chrono-Recharge OPUS app.

No. The app has been specifically designed for smartphones. It is therefore not possible to use it on a tablet.

This is the action of viewing an OPUS card’s contents. This process lets you see if your card contains transit fares and their status (type, number, expiry dates, etc.).

If you have an Android phone, ensure the NFC feature is activated. For iPhones, NFC is activated by default.

Press your OPUS card against the upper part of your mobile phone so that the app can detect the card. (The exact location of the detection area depends on the phone model; it’s usually located on the back of the phone, but can sometimes be on the front or side.)

It will vibrate once it connects. Now, hold your OPUS card still against your phone for a few seconds so the app can recognize it.

You can consult the step-by-step guide for installing the app.

Please note that you will need to repeat the same procedure to add the purchased transit fare(s) to your OPUS card before use.

There are several reasons why your card might not be detectable:

  1. Not positioning the card against your phone correctly: Phones will usually, but not always, have the detection area located in the upper part of the phone. While maintaining contact between your phone and OPUS card, slide it down your phone. It will vibrate once you hit the detection area.
  2. Not holding your OPUS card against your phone for long enough: The OPUS card must be held still against the phone for a few seconds for the reader to work properly or for adding transit fares.
  3. Your phone’s protective case is too tight and doesn’t let the NFC signal through to detect the card. Remove the case and try again.
  4. The OPUS card may be defective or expired. You can have it tested at a metropolitan ticket office, a metro booth, or a point of service of your transit operator.
  5. Your mobile device or operating system may not be compatible with the Chrono-Recharge OPUS app (this is the case for the iPhone 6 and earlier versions).

This is the action of adding (loading) one or more transit fares to an OPUS card, to enable a person to use public transit in the region (a person must hold a valid transit fare to travel).

You must be connected to a network to purchase a transit fare.

You don’t need an Internet connection to read your transit fares.

There are two main reasons for this:

  1. Your phone model does not support the NFC feature needed to read OPUS cards.
  2. Your device’s operating system (OS) is not compatible with the Chrono-Recharge OPUS app.

You could install the beta version of the Chrono-Recharge OPUS app on a more recent phone model; otherwise it will unfortunately be impossible for you to participate in the beta version test.

Yes, it’s possible. Once your OPUS card has been read, the transit fares it holds will be displayed. The “Purchase again” feature which appears in the transit fare box is a shortcut that allows you to renew the purchase of a transit fare and to go directly to the payment step.

To purchase a new transit fare, you must

  • press “Purchase a transit fare” at the bottom of the screen;
  • select the zones for your trip (departure zone, arrival zone, and any other zones you pass through);
  • choose the transit fare category you want (e.g., All Modes, Bus, etc.);
  • select the transit fare you want (e.g., single, 10 trip-pass, monthly, etc.).

You can consult the “Fare Zones” page on the ARTM website.

You can also click on the (“i”) information icons already provided during the selection of your zone to confirm the municipalities included in each of the zones you will pass through.

Most transit fares for public transit services in the Greater Montréal metropolitan area are available for purchase via this app.

Please note that some transit fares can only be purchased on specific OPUS cards. For example:

  • Reduced transit fares are only available on photo OPUS cards.
  • Single or short-term transit fares for All Modes AB, All Modes ABC, All Modes ABCD and Out-of-Territory Bus require a Designated All Modes AB OPUS card appropriate for the type of trip required.

Note that the regular fare 10-trip pass, RTL/REM Transit can only be purchased on a non refillable smart card. Therefore, you cannot purchase this transit fare via the “Chrono-Recharge OPUS” app.

Yes, it’s safe. Credit card data is stored by a trusted partner (Moneris) that complies with the strictest security standards in the world of electronic payment.

Yes, you will receive a transaction receipt by email at the address entered in the payment form or the one associated with your Google Pay or Apple Pay account.

  • If you haven’t received it by the next business day, please check your spam folder. If it’s not there, please contact technical support by filling out the form in the app’s Help section, or by calling 514-280-5895.

Please make sure that you have provided all the information in the payment form relating to the payment method you have selected. If it still does not work, please contact your bank.

Following your payment, you have a 30-minute period during which you can press your Opus card on your phone again so the app can detect your card and add your purchased transit fares. If you are unable to add the fare during this period, you will be automatically reimbursed.

No, it is not possible to integrate the OPUS card as you would a credit card. The scope of the current test is to purchase transit fares and add them to a physical OPUS card.

No. Purchased tickets can only be added to the OPUS card used at the start of the purchase process.

As soon as your OPUS card has been paid for and reloaded, you will be able to use your fare in accordance with the terms and conditions of the purchased fare.

For example, a monthly pass is valid from the first day of the month in which it is valid.

Once you have paid for your fare, you have 30 minutes to add it to your OPUS card.

To do this, you must

  • open the mobile app;
  • press your OPUS card against the upper part of your phone so that the app can detect it (as done when reading its contents). During this operation, the app will once more try to add the purchased ticket to your OPUS card.

If your fare has not been added to your OPUS card before the 30 minutes have elapsed, it will be automatically reimbursed.

This technology is widely used in the banking sector and has a proven track record for security and reliability. It also has scalable security components and always offers the best possible protection.

Rest assured that the Recharge OPUS app transmits no personal information via NFC.

Yes, it’s safe. Credit card data is stored by a trusted partner (Moneris) that complies with the strictest security standards in the world of electronic payment.

The conditions set out in the Politique relative aux remboursements et aux échanges de titres de transport apply.

You can also contact the support team by filling out the form in the app’s Help section, or by calling 514-280-5895 to find out about reimbursement terms and conditions.
