Fare reform - Zone C

How will the pass and fare reform affect you?

What is the fare reform?

It is, firstly, a simplification of the number of fare zones. The entire metropolitan area now has four main zones.

This reform modifies transit fares and passes but does not affect existing transit services. Note that transit services may include certain destinations outside the four fare zones.

In July 2021, some transit fares will be replaced by “All Modes” fares, while others will be maintained for a few more years.

Introducing the new “All Modes” fares

What is an “All Modes” fare?

This fare allows you to use all modes of regular or paratransit transportation available in the network you use and in the area where you are travelling.

By the end of the reform, all transit fares will be replaced by “All Modes” fares. This will be a gradual transition over the next four years.

“All Modes ABC”

An “All Modes ABC” fare allows you to travel anywhere in zones A, B and C.

* The REM will start operating in 2022.

“All Modes C”

An “All Modes C” fare allows you to travel in all municipalities included in zone C in the northern and southern outer suburbs.

Personalized fare schedule

Good to know

A number of TRAM and TRAIN fares will be replaced by an “All Modes ABC” fare

The TRAM 5,6,7 fares and the TRAIN 6,7 fares will be replaced by an “All Modes ABC” fare.

Some bus fares will be replaced by an “All Modes C” or “All Modes ABC” fare

If you no longer see the bus fare you used to buy, it has been replaced by an “All Modes” fare.

Please note that you must have a valid fare for the area where you are travelling.

  • If you are travelling only in zone C, an “All Modes C” fare will be sufficient.
  • If you are travelling to zone B (Laval or Longueuil) or zone A (island of Montréal), you must have an “All Modes ABC” fare.
  • If you are travelling to zone D (outside the ARTM territory), you must have an “All Modes ABCD” fare.

If a bus fare is removed, it does not mean that the bus service associated with that fare no longer exists. It means that you need an “All Modes” fare to access it.

Where to buy the new “All Modes” fares

You can buy the “All Modes” fares at a metropolitan ticket office or an exo ticket outlet, at the counter with a service agent or at the fare vending machines.

You can also purchase these new fares at a retail location near you. Hundreds of points of sale are located in various businesses across the metropolitan area.

      Good to know

Which cards will load the new “All Modes” fares?

As with certain existing transit fares, not all “All Modes” fares can be loaded together on the same OPUS card, as they are not compatible with each other. When this happens, you must use a second OPUS card or a non-rechargeable smart card (CPO).

This means that when you try to add “All Modes” fares to your OPUS card at a fare vending machine, some fares may not appear because they are not compatible with those already loaded on your OPUS card.

      • To buy these fares on a non-rechargeable smart card, you must remove your OPUS card from the machine’s card reader. The vending machine you are using will display whatever fares are available for you to buy.
      • To obtain the fares on a second OPUS card, you must buy one at the fare vending machine or at a sales counter.

Please note that the fares for 1 trip, 2 trips and 10 trips in “All Modes ABC” and “All Modes ABCD” cannot be loaded on an OPUS card. They are only available on a non-rechargeable smart card.

      Frequently asked questions

The current fare schedule is the result of combining 17 fare schedules (for the former intermunicipal boards of transport and the current public transit agencies) and more than 700 fares. They were particularly confusing in the northern and southern suburbs. The last major reform was carried out in 1998, and the situation has changed significantly since then, including the creation of the ARTM, which is responsible for fares for the metropolitan area. Fare reform became even more necessary with the integration of public transit across the metropolitan area. It will greatly simplify the user experience.

      • 1 fare schedule instead of 17 (once the reform is complete)
      • 4 fare zones instead of 8
      • About 100 transit fares compared to more than 700
      • Harmonized reduced fares for children and students

The impact on fares will be neutral or positive for 95% of users. Beginning in 2022, during a period of 4 years, support measures will gradually mitigate the few fare increases that are implemented. These increases are primarily associated with the integration of the REM and the discontinuation of TRAIN fares.

      There will be 4 zones:

      • Zone A: Island of Montréal (formerly zones 1 and 2) – July 2022
      • Zone B: Agglomeration of Longueuil and Municipality of Laval (formerly zone 3) –
        July 2022
      • Zone C: Southern and northern suburbs (formerly zones 4, 5, 6 and 7) –
        July 2021
      • Zone D: Outside the ARTM limit – July 2021

A multi‑zone fare allows users to travel through more than one zone. A single‑zone fare allows users to travel within one zone.

For example, an ABC fare will allow you to travel in zones A (Agglomeration of Montréal), B (Agglomeration of Longueuil and Municipality of Laval) and C (southern and northern suburbs). A zone C fare will allow you to travel within zone C only.

The All Modes fare gives users access to all regular and adapted modes of transportation available throughout the ARTM’s territory and in a few municipalities outside ARTM’s territory in one or more zones. For example, if you have a zone B fare, you can take the bus, metro, commuter train and, soon, the REM within zone B. Or, if you have an All Modes ABC fare, you can travel from zone C to zone A using the bus, metro, commuter train and, in 2022, the REM.

No. All Modes fares for zones C, D, ABC and ABCD will be added. In addition, certain TRAIN, TRAM and sector fares offered in these zones that are more expensive than the All Modes fare will no longer be sold. In July 2022, further changes to the fare schedule will be made. For more details please visit: www.artm.quebec/refonte-tarifaire/ (French only).

Yes, the new All Modes fares will be sold at metropolitan ticket offices, exo sales and service outlets, fare vending machines in zone C and at the usual retailers in zones C and D.All Modes fares will also be sold on the OPUS website. Only All Modes fares will be available for zones ABC and ABCD, in 10-trip booklets and single tickets on non-refillable smart cards (Solo or Occasional) at the regular price. Fares that remain unchanged will be sold at the same locations as before July 1, 2021.

Yes, an All Modes fare for zone C can be used throughout zone C. However, if you travel through zone A, an AB or ABC fare will be required.

Yes, all the new All Modes fares will be offered for subscriptions, monthly passes and ticket booklets (1, 2 and 10 trips). For now, All Modes fares for zones ABC and ABCD will be available in 10-trip booklets and single tickets on non-refillable smart cards (Solo or Occasional) at the regular price only.

No. For the time being, the transfer validity period will not change for any transit network.

Yes, fare categories will remain unchanged. You will be able to purchase monthly All Modes fares for zones C and D at reduced rates for students, children and seniors. In addition, the student fare reduction will be harmonized at 40% throughout the ARTM’s territory.

As of July 1, 2021, all children aged 6 to 11 will be able to travel free of charge throughout the ARTM’s territory, at any time of the day or night and at any time of the year, while under the supervision of a person aged 14 or over who has paid their fare. Maximum of five children per supervisory individual.

If a child aged 6 to 11 is travelling under the supervision of a person aged 14 years or older who has paid their fare, they will not need an OPUS card. However, if a child aged 6 to 11 is travelling alone, they will need to carry an OPUS card with a photo, loaded with the correct fare.

Beginning on July 1, all students 18 years of age and older who meet the student fare eligibility criteria will get a 40% discount when purchasing a monthly pass.

Yes. Once the reform is complete, only All Modes and Bus partout tickets allowing travel between zones A, B, C and D will be offered. No fares from the current rate schedule (prior to July 2021) will be retained.

Users of the former Deux-Montagnes train line will continue to enjoy the MTLREM or TRAMREM fare they currently have. The only factor that could affect their transit fare is the annual indexation on July 1. Users of the Mascouche train line will continue to enjoy a discount of up to 30%. This discount will apply to new fares that take effect within the territory on July 1, 2021.

OPUS+ and OPUS+ entreprise subscribers in zones C and D will be affected by the fare reform on July 1, 2021. All affected subscribers will receive an email with instructions on how to make changes to their transit fare in their customer account on the exo site, if applicable.

All affected subscribers in zones C and D will need to modify their customer account on the exo website in order to obtain the correct transit fare. Emails will be sent to affected subscribers to inform them of the steps they need to take.

Yes, all OPUS+ subscription privileges will be maintained.

All subscribers in zones C and D will need to modify their customer account on the exo website, even if their subscription is suspended. Emails will be sent to affected subscribers to inform them of the steps they need to take.

Students who need to modify their tickets must do so in their customer account. Emails will be sent to affected subscribers to inform them of the steps they need to take.

No. Your employer will be informed of the changes by Transportation Management Centres, which manage the OPUS+ entreprise subscription programs.

Yes, fares withdrawn from the price list on July 1st, 2021 can still be validated beyond this date.
